Owning Your Own Voice Field Guide

Objective

This project required the creation of a field guide to help the reader process their trauma through Spiritual Autobiography.

Client

Wave Pool Gallery, Broken Into Beautiful Women’s Empowerment Group, and Washington United Church of Christ

Deliverables

An accessible field guide to help the reader process their trauma through Spiritual Autobiography.

Research

Collaborating with Broken Into Beautiful proved beneficial because their woodworking class gave me a plethora of images to include in the guide. Seeing them build benches for their communities served as an excellent metaphor for the rebuilding that the reader would be doing through the exercises. I also included quotes from group members to further encourage the reader and set the tone of the guide.

Sketches

My strategy was to keep the guide accessible while still being visually engaging. I stuck to a larger type size for older readers with Filson Soft a typeface that would take the reader through the somewhat emotionally difficult exercises while maintaining readability and an empathetic tone.

Layout Iterations

I opted for minimalist and clean layouts with occasional unexpected rotations and type size changes. This helped to ground the otherworldly images in reality and avoid having the type and image compete with each other.

Final Layout

The result of this careful deliberation was a cohesive and beautiful guide that met the constraints of both our budget and the three-month deadline for the Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services grant.
